Well Aron's Depth Scale is used for measuring the depth of trance. Aron
has given 6 levels of depth. Level 1-3 are called Mnesic and Level 4-6 are
Amnesic. should be applied in the first session to see whether your client
is analytical or non- analytical.If non-analytical then what is his level
of hynotizability and this scale helps you in assessing it.
· At Level 1 we check for eye catalepsy i.e. give the deepener of counting
back from 5 to 1 with every count your sleep will become more deep and
eyes will become heavier,at the count of 1 i'll ask you to open your eyes
but you'll not be able to do so.If your client is not able to open his
eyes that means he has passed Level 1.
· At Level 2 we check arm catalepsy,again give the deepner and say with
every count your hand will become light as cotton(raise your client's hand
to check the lightness) and as i touch your hand it will become as hard as
iron rod and u'll not be able to move it you can try to move it.If your
client is not able to move it he has passed Level 2.
· At level 3 again give the deepener and then say that at the count of 1
i'll ask you to count from 1 to 10 and as you do the counting you'll
forget the number that comes b/w 5 and 7 or 6 and 8 and so on(Can be
alphabets also). then ask your client to do the counting if your client
misses the number then has passed Level 3.
· At Level 4 give the deepener then tell your client that as i'll ask your
name but you'll be unable to tell me your second name or full name and
then ask your client to tell his full name if he is unable to do so then
he passes Level 4 or if he tells his surname in a confused way or say half
surname then he is said to be at Level 3.5.You can also ask client's
address or prick a needle (sterlized) and say that you will not feel the
pain.
· Level 5 is for positive hallucination i.e. perceiving an object in it's
absence. So before you give the deepner tell him that in a moment i'll ask
you to open your eyes at the count of 1 and without breaking your sleep
you'll open them and will see a cat or a teddy bear in my hand you have to
describe it.After the deepner if your client opens his eyes and tells you
that he can see a cat or a teddy bear and describes it well then he passes
Level 5.If he says that cat's image is very blurred or gives a vague
description the object then he is at level 4.5.Hallucination can also
auditory or kinesthetic.
· Level 6 is for negative hallucination i.e. not perceiving an object that
is present in reality. Rest of the procedure being the same as above just
tell your client that after opening your eyes you'll not be able to see
shoes in your feet or just hold an object in your hand and say that u'll
not be able to see any object in my hand.If the client do so then he has
passed this level also.
Post hypnotic suggestions work well on those who pass 5th and 6th level.
After inducing the client and giving the deepners we can check the level.
The more levels he passes the more hypnotizable he is and one can carry on
with methods of hypnotizing used for non- analytical client but if your
client has not passed even a single level on this scale then your client
is the analytical one and needs to be dealt in another way, then the usual
visualization dosen't work for him. We can also use this scale on the same
client from time to time to check whether taking regular hypnotic sessions
increases client's hypnotizability or not.
