Waking Suggestions
Waking suggestions play a central role in modern methods of
producing hypnosis. They are the basic tools used to predict the
probable outcome of any attempt to use hypnosis on an individual.
Many of the properties of suggestibility are best exhibited by
waking suggestions, whereas hypnosis tends to mask them. From an
applied standpoint, waking suggestions are also of importance in
that many individuals who cannot be hypnotized can still benefit
considerably from their use.

Now let's see some of waking hypnosis techniques

The Lemon Test:

Your big initial challenge with the audience will be to establish
what is termed as suspension of disbelief. We have all experienced
it. Ever go to a movie or read a book, say for instance, something
with a science fiction theme, and your mind first says, "But this
is not real.". But this is not real." Yet , as we begin to get into
the book or movie, as you begin to enjoy the experience, you allow
yourself to believe that it is real. What is happening is that you
are bypassing your critical facilities. This experience allows this
suspension of disbelief to take place.

Holding a lemon in your hand and a knife in the other, please
observe this lemon I hold in my hand, and think about it this way:
it is yellow, bitter tasting, acidy-bitter, sour juicy lemon...(as
you cut into it and squeeze)...I will take this knife and cut into
the lemon... and as I do, the bitter, sour juice drips on the floor.
Now I'm going to suck that sour, bitter lemon juice (sucking on the
lemon, with gusto), with loud sucking noises, exaggerating
puckering your lips).. Boy, is this lemon bitter and tart! Whoa
that's sour!... And as I suck on this lemon, notice how your mouth
begins to fill with saliva...(keeping sucking on the lemon until you
get enough  of a response from the audience).

"There! See how you felt it... how you could almost feel the
bitterness, the sour taste? That is the power of suggestion at
work. The lemon provides you with a idea, an idea of something
sour. That idea becomes realized unconsciously in your mind, the
salivary glands secrete, and your mouth fills with saliva!

That is the power of imagination of suggestion and hypnosis, the
more you are able to concentrate upon the ideas presented, the more
powerful will be the effects experienced.

Hand Magic

"Let's try another experiment... this time, I would like you hold
your hand out like this (palm facing towards the face, hand pointed
up, and fingers held together) about a foot in front of your face,
at nose level... pick a spot in the middle of the palm of your hand
and focus all your attention there. As you concentrate forget about
anything or anyone else in the room...only listen to the sound of my
voice...you may notice a couple of things. First you may notice that
your hand will feel like it wants to move in towards your face. If
either or both of these begin to happen, let them. Don't force it
to happen. But if it does, just allow it to happen..

"Right now, as you focus all your attention on that one spot, you
may find it difficult to do. Shapes and colors may begin to emanate
out from that spot, your eyes may begin to hurt. Keep focused. Only
one think of that one spot. As you do, imagine a force, as
invisible force lightly pushing on the back of your hand, drawing
it towards your face...concentrate on your hand being drawn towards
your face. You can feel the invisible force working, and as your
hand moves in towards your face, the more it moves, the easier and
faster it will happen."

There will be a number of people that will not respond at all to
this experiment. For some a mild sensation will occur. For others,
the hand will move easily and the fingers completely separate.
These people will be your best subjects, and you need to make note
of who they are.

There is a strong psychological "game" that you need to play here.
You must convince the audience that you are in command, that those
people who succeeded in the two experiments did so because they
most closely followed your instructions, and that those who were
les successful did not.

One other thing you will notice, that will be critical to the
success of your performance, is to feed subjects strong visual
cues, ones that they can easily relate to. The lemon experiment is
a good example.

So, when you want a subject to do something, say, move his hand in
towards his face, give him a persuasive image to guide his actions
and movements, like the idea of a "force" pushing on the hand.

Eyes Open Test

"It's another good example of the power of suggestion...What I would
like everyone to do is relax in your sea, place your feet firmly on
the ground, and rest your hands in the lap. Now close your
eyes...Close them together very tightly ...tight...very tight...Now
with
your eyelids closed. I want you to roll your eyes up, up to the top
of your head...imagine yourself trying to look up through the top of
your head...squeeze your eyelids together tighter...they are
becoming
stuck...stuck so tight...completely stuck...that's it...keep
looking up,
looking back to the top of your head...feel your eye lids stuck
tightly together they cannot open...no matter how hard you try, your
eye lids will not open...try...try had!...Hard...See, they open.

You want to be closely observing the volunteers at this point. Many
people will be struggling to open their eyes. Many will not be able
to do it. After a few seconds, say, "Alright. You can open your
eyes now! Relax...open your eyes!

This is a good test because, the small muscles around the eyes are
very susceptible to suggestive influence, combined with
physiological fact that is impossible to open your eye lids with
rolled back in your head.

Emerging from the Hypnotic State

The emerging process is fairly simple. You can simply say: "Open
your eyes and emerge from hypnosis." You may empower the subjects
to emerge at their convenience by saying: When you are ready,
emerge yourself from hypnosis and open your eyes. If time is
limited you may say: In a minute you will open your eyes and emerge
from hypnosis.

Even if you say nothing and simply leave the room, most people will
emerge spontaneously in a short time.

Two considerations make the emerging process important and useful.

1. Emerging from hypnosis is akin to waking a person from deep
sleep. We want to emerge people in a gentle and pleasant way so
they feel good about the experience.
2. The emerging process is a wonderful opportunity to repeat and
reinforce the suggestions and ratify the goals of the session.
Thus, skilled hypnotherapists view the emerging process as an
integral part of the session and utilize it to enhance the
effectiveness of hypnosis.

A typical emerging script may go something like this:

"I'm going to count from one to five. At the count of five you will
open your eyes, and emerge from hypnosis, fully aware and feeling
wonderful in every day.

One... Your subconscious mind will continue to process the experience
until it is completely processed and fully integrated in wake time
and sleep time. You may have some interesting dreams. Dreams of
integration. I don't know what else may happen, but good things
will definitely happen because you are not the same person you were
when you walked in here. You will remember all that is beneficial
to you now and retain the rest for future use.

Two... (Suggestion relative to the subject's issue)

You will hardly ever think about smoking. In the occasion that you
do, you will think about how much better off you were, and how much
better you feel, now that you have quit smoking.

Three... Your mind is clearing, feeling relaxed, confident and at
peace. You will remember what you chose and need to remember now
and may recall in the future the things that re pertinent to you.
In your future sessions with me you will enter in the hypnotic
state much easier, much quicker and much deeper.

Three... (Deliberately repeat three. Confusion facilitates the
distraction of the conscious mind and enhances the communicating
with the subconscious).

You are becoming an inspiration to everyone you know. You can't
wait to tell them what an amazing experience you had with hypnosis.

Four...Take a deep breath. You may feel as if you can smile on the
inside and out. In the next few days, notice the changes that are
taking place. (For first time subjects, create time distortion by
adding): It's amazing what just a few of short minutes in hypnosis
can do.

Five... Eyes open and clear...Fully alert... Full awareness.. Feeling
refreshed, relaxed and so good.

Immediately after subject open eyes make the following comment:

"You did outstanding. You have an excellent mind. You kind of
surprised yourself didn't you? Looks like you needed that"
(subjects need encouraging feedback)

For the first time clients only ask: "Off the top of your head, how
long do you think you were in hypnosis?" Most clients will estimate
a much better shorter time than in reality

Your cover suggestion "It's amazing what just a few of short
minutes in hypnosis can do" helps in inducing time distortion. It
provides proof to the subject that indeed they were in hypnosis and
lost track of time.

Rakesh try these experiments, and see for yourself how it works.
And do not forget to write me how you felt. As I said before, I
