Franz A. Mesmer  had developed the theory of animal magnetism. Franz A. Mesmer's procedure came to be known as Mesmerism after his name. In his time, Franz A. Mesmer  treated a large number of patients through mesmerism. In India Dr. Esdaile had used mesmerism in Calcutta for surgeries. It is said that Dr. Esdaile had done 3000 major and minor surgeries under mesmerism. At that time anesthesia was not discovered. Dr. Esdaile had found that Mesmerism was a potent pain killer and there were minimum death after surgeries under mesmerism. It was Dr. James Braid who replaced the term Mesmerism and coined the term Hypnotism.
